The productivity of the Teluk Lamong Container Terminal in Surabaya, East Java, has increased with the operation of 20 Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs) from Konecranes. The ASCs are the first and only automated heavy equipment currently in operation in Indonesia.
According to Faruq Hidayat, Director of PT Terminal Teluk Lamong, the 20 ASCs operate across a 326-hectare port area. Unlike conventional Container Cranes (CCs) or Rubber Tyred Gantries (RTGs), the ASCs operate semi-automatically with centralized control from a single Control Room Tower, also known as a Remote Operating Station (ROS).
This technological advancement has significantly improved operational performance. Safety protocols and field effectiveness have significantly improved. Container loading and unloading performance has significantly increased, reaching 60 box ships per hour (BSH) from the previous average of 56 BSH.
The implementation of ASC is a strategic choice for this subsidiary of Pelindo Container Terminal Holding, which currently handles around 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year.
